The Point In Life

Is there a point in life? Is it simply to procreate and leave something for the next generation? Or to experience as much as you can during your brief existence then die and soon be forgotten forever?

According to Jesus we must love Him more than our own life if we are to receive eternal life. In Jesus there is life, lasting life, a real future. In us there is no future unless Christ is in us. And so the old man must die, that is flesh and blood, and the new man, that is Christ in us, grow. But this human body of ours remains until death causes it to decay or the resurrection does us transform.

So how do we love Jesus? We love Him by imitating Him as we would a parent, by accepting that we are created in His image and not descendants of apes or amoebas, by learning His ways through the Holy Scriptures and by obeying His commands and commandments. In other words by letting Him into our lives. This is the way that leads to life. This is the way that leads to growth, development of righteous character and acceptance by God. This is the new man.

If Jesus wants you in His Kingdom then life is not pointless. He has a purpose and a plan for us. Through Him we can grow to become useful and worthwhile. This present decaying body, if you are over the hill, is but a temporary dwelling.

We have to care for our body in a Godly way. This is part of our training and responsibility. We care for it through proper diet and nutrition, cleaning and maintaining according to Godly principles as stated in the scriptures. Some have very useful bodies and can do much with it. Others are not so fortunate and have limited use. Still others need to be cared for totally less they die.

In this industrial western society we live in a very self centered environment. It is a get what you can for yourself first and let your neighbours fend for themselves scenario. This is not an entirely evil way for the scriptures teach; if a man will not work let him not eat, and each is to pay a tithe of their increase year by year. So a person should strive for increase and work for it. This does not however excuse avarice, selfishness or pride.

Is socialism the Christian way? Personally I think capitalism is closer to the truth. But not a cold, heartless, self centered capitalism but rather one that has genuine concern for the needy and handicapped. Society should be directed toward solving every problem and taking care of every citizen. Those who are able to do more should benefit from their special gifts and those who cannot do much should be comforted within reason. Canada has room for improvement.

If those who are able do not work and benefit from their abilities, then who will help the not so fortunate? If the unfortunate are not cared for with love then it is pointless. It does no good to make the unfortunate feel like burdens when they are often already overwhelmed with this feeling. The fortunate and less fortunate both need to be treated properly in order for society to prosper.

The socialist governments of this world have not given us a good impression of socialism; they were too saturated with oppressors. In order for capitalism to work it must be free of oppressors and be well governed or well disciplined. We live in a fragile world both emotionally and environmentally. So often the emotional scars of youth trouble us till death, even when death occurs at an old age. And the pollution of decades ago can continue to cause severe problems for future generations; for example DDT and AIDS.

Man has responsibilities to himself, to his neighbours, to the environment and to God. If a person feels useless and unloved he is a danger and a burden. If society thinks life is pointless it is in danger. The struggle for righteousness, both personally and socially, must go on. Righteousness is a gift from God. We must pray and ask God to remain in our lives in order to prosper. It is a grave error to cast God and righteousness out. It is sin and when sin is fully grown it brings on death. Without God life ceases to exist because God is life and is the giver and sustainer of life.

The point is that we must overcome the evils of this world, its atheist goals, pointless ventures and selfish objectives, in order to attain life with Jesus in His soon coming Kingdom. Things will be different there and then. The kingdom will be made up of those who overcame, that is those who saw the purpose in life, those who lived Christ^s way, the righteous and the saints.

Death to futility.

Long live appreciation.
