Yom Kippur is the Day of Atonement. It is a day where we afflict our souls, that is to say that we do not feed our bodies on that day. It is like a shop cleaning or maintenance day. It is a day where God covers our sins spiritually, perhaps with a lubricating or preserving oil, and makes atonement for the injustices and hardships suffered. The fast begins by skipping the evening meal on the previous evening so that our stomachs will be empty on the fast day. The fast day is a twenty four hour period. The day of Atonement is the 10th day of the 7th month, the year beginning in spring, and the months counted by the moon cycles.
