Jesus had confidence that He was doing the will of His Father at all times.
John 5:30 (GNB) Jesus said:
I can do nothing on my own authority; I judge only as God tells me, so my judgement is right, because I am not trying to do what I want, but only what he who sent me wants.
I struggle between being quiet and falling short of attaining a gift of the spirit.
Proverbs 17:27 (RSV)
He who restrains his words has knowledge, and he who has a cool spirit is a man of understanding.
1 Corinthians 12:27 and 28 (NIV84)
Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. And in the church God has appointed first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then workers of miracles, also those having gifts of healing, those able to help others, those with gifts of administration, and those speaking in different kinds of tongues.
But above all I think it is worst to do nothing.
Matthew 5:13 to 16 (NASB)
You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how will it be made salty again? It is good for nothing anymore, except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men.
You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do men light a lamp, and put it under the peckmeasure, but on the lampstand; and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.
Jesus tells us that His followers listen to His voice (John 10:27). The Bible tells us that we have a good understanding if we do His commandments (1 John 2:3 and 4, Romans 2:13, Psalms 111:10). What about the other 85% of the time?
Do we exercise the freedom that is set by the truth (John 8:32)? Can we do pretty much whatever we find to do as long as we stay within the commandments and the will of God? Perhaps but bear in mind:
James 3:1 (GNB)
My brothers and sisters, not many of you should become teachers. As you know, we teachers will be judged with greater strictness than others.
1 Timothy 1:7 (GNB)
They want to be teachers of God^s law, but they do not understand their own words or the matters about which they speak with so much confidence.
Hebrews 3:6 (GNB)
But Christ is faithful as the Son in charge of God^s house. We are his house if we keep up our courage and our confidence in what we hope for.
